A person’s mental health affects the way in which they navigate and experience work and life. With this qualification, you will learn how to support individuals with mental health issues across multiple occupational areas.
Whether you are keen to work for a mental health service, or within the health and social care sector, you can develop the skills and knowledge required to provide support and awareness.
The Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health (RQF) is delivered by our partners London South East Colleges. On completion of your course you will be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health (RQF), the Ofqual qualification number for this course is 601/8968/X.
The free online course is split into manageable units
Unit 1: Understanding the Context of Mental Health and Wellbeing
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Understand the range of current legislation that applies to mental health and how it has changed over time
- Understand the range of attitudes and perceptions of mental ill-health
- Understand the current pattern and range of services for mental health problems and how these have evolved
Unit 2: Promotion of Mental Health and Wellbeing
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Understand mental health and wellbeing in the different stages of life
- Understand how to support mental health and wellbeing
Unit 3: Mental Health Problems – Associated Issues and Consequences
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Understand how mental health problems have social consequences for the individual, their family and society as a whole
- Understand the use/misuse of substances and alcohol in the context of mental health problems (dual diagnosis)
- Understand mental health problems in the context of offending and the criminal justice system
- Understand suicide and the prevention of suicide
- Understand self-harm
Unit 4: Understanding Mental Ill-Health
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Understand a range of mental health conditions
- Understand the treatments and interventions available for a range of mental health problems
- Understand care planning in mental health services
Unit 5: Working in Mental Health
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Know how to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for working in mental health services
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of a care or support worker working in mental health
- Understand the roles of other professionals providing mental health services
- Understand how to use reflection in the development of skills, knowledge and practice
How Do I Get Started?
Once you’ve chosen your course you can click ‘Start free course’ below. You will be taken immediately into the London South College Colleges online learning platform. Once you’ve added your details and confirmed your eligibility you will have access to your course. You can view your content and start preparing your first assignment.
Whilst you are doing this you will need to provide some more enrolment details to London South East Colleges, instructions will be given to help you. Once all your details have been provided you will receive a call from a learning support officer to verify your details. Once this step is complete, you will have full access to your online course!

All you need to do is meet the following eligibility criteria:
Eligibility Criteria
- Aged 19 or over
- Currently living in England
- Not have completed any section of the course previously
- Must have lived in the UK/EU/EEA for at least 3 years*
*EEA nationals will need to have obtained either pre settlement or settled status and provide evidence of this.
Receive an accredited NCFE CACHE or TQUK certificate
The certificate is a record of achievement and your reward for completing a nationally recognised qualification.
- NCFE CACHE and TQUK are both fully-approved as awarding organisations by Ofqual
- Demonstrate to employers that you have gained a recognised and regulated qualification in your chosen subject
